In a recent article, The Real Deal explored the comparatively new phenomenon of South Florida developers recruiting acclaimed international architects to design their anticipated projects. Until the last three years, those same developers have been mostly content to use local architects to design their projects.
“A lot of developers now see a value in having one of those big name architects designing their building,” Rodolphe el-Khoury, dean of the University of Miami School of Architecture told the publication. "“You can say that this is just a fad and it’s all about marketing and branding, but that is a limited, cynical view. It is really about delivering a better product.”
These award-winning architects bring a fresh perspective to the area. Their knowledge makes South Florida developers better, and ultimately, it helps teach local architects more and allows makes them push their craft further, in the process.
These are just some of the upcoming developments, featuring design work by a renowned international "starchitect":
1000 Museum
Currently under construction in Downtown Miami, 1000 Museum is one of the most antipated residentional towers on the East Coast of the United States. Designed by the recently deceased Zaha Hadid, the iconic tower features a distinctive exoskeleton, making its architect almost immediately recognizable. Zaha Hadid was the first female to win the prestigious Pritzker Prize in architecture, and her attractive - almost surreal - designs are responsible for major landmarks across the globe. One Thousand Museum is set for completion in 2018. Just before her untimely death, Hadid wrote a note to the developer stating how pleased she was with the progress of the tower. It is sure to be a show-stopper.
Eighty Seven Park
Eighty Seven Park is set to rise on a pristine oceanfront lot in Miami Beach's North Shore. Like the previous tower, Eighty Seven Park was also designed by a Pritzker Prize-winning architect. Renzo Piano is widely known for his connection to nature, and his first condo tower is sure to be no exception. The ultra-exclusive tower will be bordered by the 35-acre North Shore Park to the south and a private garden to the north, ensuring spectacular, unobstructed ocean, city and Intracoastal views. Piano is also responsible for major landmarks across the globe, including the new Whitney Museum in New York City.
Ritz-Carlton Residences Miami Beach
Currently under construction on the only lake in Miami Beach, the Ritz-Carlton Residences Miami Beach will provide the level of luxury synonymous with the Ritz-Carlton name. With that kind of reputation to live up to, the developer of the lavish project recruited acclaimed Italian architect Piero Lissoni. While he has designed projects all over the world, this is his first project in South Florida. The anticipated development will also include a handful of limited-collection Piero Lissoni Villa Homes. The ultra-exclusive, single-family homes will feature private dockage, custom Boffi kitchens and world-class services.
