Known simply as "The Island", Palm Beach is an affluent town located on a 16-mile barrier island separated from West Palm Beach and Lake Worth by the Intracoastal Waterway
"Wintering in Palm Beach" began in the 1880's when Standard Oil magnate Henry Morrison Flagler built a railroad across Florida and grand hotels on the tropical barrier island. His friends and fellow captains of industry were invited to rejuvenate in the sunshine by day and attend lavish formal parties by night. By the early 1900's, Palm Beach was the vacation destination of choice for the wealthiest Americans living in the Northeast.
The polished avenues leading to the ocean beaches and Lake Worth are lined with towering Ficus hedges and Coconut Palms. The main streets feature rows of the more stately Royal Palms. One can only glimpse the magnificent estates through the lush flowering landscapes and ornate gated driveways that meet the street.
Attractions in Palm Beach include Worth Avenue, an iconic shopping and dining street stretching 4 blocks from Lake Worth to the Atlantic Ocean. The Breakers Hotel is an historic oceanfront hotel featuring a spa, restaurants, nightlife, pools, shopping and a championship golf course. The Flagler Museum features grand architecture and artwork throughout the former 73-room estate of Henry Flagler. For outdoor pursuits, Palm Beach Lake Trail features a 5-mile waterfront path for walking, jogging and biking.
Palm Beach of old is giving way to new less formal more diverse and youthful society. You can still belong to the Society of the Four Arts and frequent the Palm Beach Symphony, and memberships to the elite Everglades Club, Sailfish Club, Bath and Tennis Club or Palm Beach Country Club are available. However, Clematis Street and City Place in West Palm Beach are just a bridge away. The Raymond Kravis Center for The Performing Arts offers dining, art and culture. International polo matches and equestrian events are a short drive westward to the Palm Beach Polo Club in Wellington.
Much of Palm Beach's charm derives from its architecture, which is a collage of Italian, Spanish and Moorish styles made famous by Addison Mizner, Maurice Fatio, John Volk and others. Palm Beach real estate will always be the "Gold Standard" of Florida's Gold Coast.
