Health and wellness is quickly becoming the newest trend in luxury real estate. Developers are tapping into the wellness market for real estate by offering luxury amenities like open-air yoga studios, medicinal gardens with calming herbs and meditation courtyards. They are creating interior spaces that incorporate nature into the design to create a peaceful surrounding geared to reduce stress and promote mental clarity.
Katherine Johnston, a senior research fellow for the nonprofit Global Wellness Institute headed a study that tracked the expansion of the wellness industry into the real-estate market. GWI’s research revealed that health and wellness in real estate is a $134 billion industry and is growing every year. According to Katherine, these numbers will continue to grow as people’s health and behavior is positively impacted by their homes and community spaces.
What should wellness-minded individuals look for in their new home? One should examine the interior and exterior features of a building to look for materials and design elements that provide a healthier living space. For example, what is the quality of paint, finishes and flooring used on the interiors? Ask yourself how the interior space is incorporated with the outdoor space. You should also look for buildings that offer wellness focused amenities including yoga, physical fitness, meditation, spas and nutrition planning.
